Alongside working with individuals and changing nappies, I have been busy developing an online recovery course for people living with ME/CFS and long covid.
While there are already some excellent recovery courses out there, I wanted to create the course that I wish had been around when I was ill. That is, a course which embraces the very latest neuroscience and psychoneuroimmunology research into persistent physical symptoms. And which draws on powerful experiential psychotherapies.
I also wanted to create a course that does not fall into the trap of assuming that there is a one-size fits all approach to recovery. Instead, the course I am creating is all about taking ownership of your own recovery, and flexibly navigating your own unique route, guided by some central, science-backed principles.
And while I am personally very enthusiastic about the science, I am going to refrain from nerding out unnecessarily and overloading you with information. I am designing the course for people who have limited capacity in mind.
Structure
The course will be divided into three modules, each of which will contain three lessons. So, in total there will be nine lessons.
Each lesson will include a mix of educational segments, guided practices, and other experiential exercises.
Here is an overview of what each module will include:
No matter how unwell you are at the start of the course, the first module will help you to build the internal resources you will need for the recovery journey ahead.
I will guide you through practices to calm your nervous system, and help you learn to live within your current “window of tolerance”. This will create the conditions for you to expand your capacity moving forwards.
We will also begin to work with any barriers you may have to cultivating a balanced, flexible nervous system.
Then, once you feel ready, we will learn about the science of persistent physical symptoms. This will serve as a foundation for our work in the next two modules.
This module draws on really exciting new approaches to working with persistent physical symptoms, including Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET). We will also borrow from trauma-focused psychotherapies.
I will support you to help your brain to process your physical symptoms in a new way. I will also help you to connect to your emotions and work through overwhelming life experiences that you may not have had the opportunity to fully process.
In learning to reprocess these experiences, we can create the conditions for the brain and the body’s regulatory systems to shift out of a rigid state of emergency and into a more flexible state of greater balance and vitality.
In the final module, I will support you to move back into the world in a gradual and safe way.
I will also help you to become more flexible in how you meet the world. This involves allowing the more rigidly protective parts of your personality to soften and become more flexible.
At heart, we will be supporting you to rebuild a new life that feels authentic to you.
Finally, I will encourage you to reflect on the ways you have grown as a person during your journey navigating a fatigue-related condition, and to explore the meaning you will carry forward.
When will the course launch?
I hope you are as excited about the course as I am!
As I’m sure you can imagine (and may know from personal experience), it can be difficult to offer an accurate timeline for when a project like this will be done, especially when you are a one-person operation, balancing project work with regular clinical work and parenting!
Nonetheless, based on where things are now, I think a realistic estimate is that the course will hopefully go live in Autumn/Fall 2026.
I fully understand that this may feel too long for you to wait, and I would absolutely encourage you to look at other courses that already exist, as well as working with other practitioners in the meantime.
Pricing and options
The cost of the course is to be confirmed, but my hope is to make it affordable to as many people as possible. Partly this will be achieved by offering a two or three different options for taking the course as follows:
1) Taking a self-directed, on-demand course, working through the content on your own and in your own time. (Most affordable option).
2) Combining the on-demand course content with a large-group weekly live Zoom Q&A session with me to accompany each lesson. (Mid-range option).
3) Joining a small weekly coaching group with me to accompany each lesson of the course material. (More expensive option).
If you are interested in taking the course, please do drop me a line.
It would also help me to get a sense of the level of interest in each of the above three options, if you could kindly complete this short survey.
I will update this page with news about the course, so do check back here in future!
